Dental technology is rapidly advancing, and now it is possible to have a dental crown crafted and placed on the very same day. But does that come with a sacrifice in quality? Is the result really as good as a crown that is prepared using the traditional method of sending it to a separate lab and coming back two weeks later? In short, yes, same day crowns are just as good as conventional ones — if not better, thanks to their numerous advantages. Stick around as we take a look at the differences between crowns below.
How Same Day Crowns Work
A same day crown is possible thanks to something known as CEREC, or the chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics. It’s a long title that means your dentist can prepare and place your crown all from the comfort of your chairside (or the neighboring room in our office, at least).
With CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology, your dentist reshapes your tooth, takes a digital scan, and builds a blueprint for a customized crown that is manufactured out of a single block of dental porcelain in the CEREC milling machine. Once it’s ready a few minutes later, we check to make sure it fits just right before bonding it securely over the prepared tooth. And that’s it!
Same Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns
Same day crowns offer a more efficient alternative to traditional crowns — and you do not have to sacrifice quality when you choose the same day method. Research shows that a crown created with CEREC can last just as long as one prepared the traditional manner.
So if the results are the same, what are the differences between these two restorative methods? Some of the most prominent include…
- CEREC produces dental crowns made out of natural-looking dental porcelain, making a same day crown a great option for teeth in the front of the smile.
- Digital scanning technology is far more comfortable and accurate than traditional bite-down impressions.
- You can save vacation days and sick leave from work when you have your crown procedure completed in just one appointment.
- There’s no need to wear a temporary crown between appointments.
- CEREC crowns are completely customized to your unique dentition for truly fabulous results.
