What if My Denture is Loose?

May 16, 2018

Senior woman pointing to flawless smileMany patients have a loose or ill-fitting denture, and they just assume this is the norm. When you receive a high quality denture, it should fit well without slipping and sliding. If your denture is loose, you don’t have to accept this as just a fact of life. It’s time to visit a skilled dentist to discuss ways to improve the fit and function of your denture. Today, an experienced dentistry expert can create light weight dentures that look and feel much more like your healthy, natural smile.

How is a Loose Denture Repaired?

If your denture feels loose, there are a number of ways we can help you feel more confident in your denture’s fit and function. For many patients, the first step is to use a small amount of denture adhesive available in your local pharmacy. These adhesives provide improved function and stability when dentures are a little loose. If your denture is very loose, we may need to have it refitted, relined, or completely replaced. We encourage patients to have their dentures replaced every five to ten years to ensure proper fit and function.

How can I improve the Stability of My Denture?

When your denture is first created, it should fit like a glove and stay firmly in place. Over time, the pressure on your gum and bone tissue will lead to changes in the shape of your gum line and the fit of your denture. This is why patients usually need a brand new denture every five to ten years. To improve the stability of your denture and keep it functioning as long as possible, there are a few things you can do:

  • Take special care to clean the denture and store it in cool water every night
  • Never sleep with your denture in place
  • Visit your dentist’s office at least every six months for checkups
  • Seek repair right away if you notice changes in the function of your denture

One other option you may have is a dental implant supported denture. There are options that are completely fixed and mimic your natural smile. These fixed implant dentures will need to be removed by your dentist during six month dental exams. A removable implant overdenture often provides patients the best qualities of both removable and implant fixed dentures. A skilled dentist can help you find the right denture option to meet your needs.
